My 07 4.0 Burning oil..

Was wondering if anyone else has an issue like this. I just rolled over to 30,000 miles on the odo. I have about 3,000 miles on mobil 1 oil and i decided to check the oil to see where i was. Well it turns out that I needed about half a quart top off. On the dipstick it read in the middle of both dots. I always leave it at the top dot whenever I change my oil. Should I be concerned about this or is this normal for an engine with 30,000 miles?

So using oil at a rate of a qt. every 6000 miles? That's VERY good and totally not something to be concerned about IMO.

Even so, it's good to be aware this engine can develop an oil leak at the timing chain cover seal. There's a TSB on it and it's covered under warranty, so it's something to have them check on when you get oil changed.

Not sure about the oil use, but I have had a related concern. How much oil does the filter media hold. You fill the crankcase to the correct amount (top dot), start the engine and warm everything up. Shut it down and allow oil to drain back. All of it cannot possibly drain out of the filter. The dipstick would then read low. Am I full of crap?

I just changed my oil. 7000miles on Penzoil Platinum and it appears I only lost .5 quarts.

I hope so - you should be using a filter with an anti-drainback valve, which should keep the filter full. OEM filters and all quality aftermarket filters have this valve. The is a slight difference in level before and after the filter is filled, but since these filters are so small, it's not really noticable. Always re-check the level and top up if needed after running it.

The owner's manual will tell you how much oil the engine 'consumes' over a certain mileage. I don't have my manual in front of me right now but I believe it was around 0.5 qts over 5000 miles, so that is completely normal.

The Book says 1Liter/1000Km or 1.1 qt. per 600 miles. If you have a truck consuming anywhere near this amount it isn't normal, but I guess Toyota wants to leave themselves plenty of room to wiggle out of any warranty repairs. My I-4 won't even consume .5 qt. in 5000 miles. Highway or around town.

Did you recently change brands ? Did you notice this in the first 30 k miles of use ? Did you change viscosity ?

Doesn't sound like you are loosing to much, especially if you just changed something about the oil.
