I have an 1988 4 runner California. I took it to a test only smog and they said it failed. The work order said that the timing did not retard when jumper wired.
What does this mean?
Reply 1 : smog issue
It means the Electronic Spark Advance may not be working correctly.
When you jump the 2 terminals in the test connector to set the timing, the timing should change, but sounds like it isn't.
Hard to say more without knowing what engine you have.
