4AF carburetor choke issues???

Okay, if you read my other thread that i posted about ''how to remove the carburetor?'', then you already know my rollas havin carb problems, and needs to be diagnosed and fixed or replaced. But, after reading this carburetor diagnosis web page, and looking at 3 or 4 sections that have my symptoms, the 1st thing they ALL say is that my electric choke assist was set wrong and/or malfunctioning, or that there was a vacuum leak somewhere in the system. What im wondering is, should i change my original plan of replacin the carb with one from the junkyard? or should i go with this diagnosis, that the choke is set wrong, and then re-install the carb, and just take the electrical stuff off the choke and making it into a mechanical choke??

Or, how can i figure out how to ''repair'' or reset the choke so it'll start working properly again?

edit: according to that diagnosis site, i really may not have to rebuild the ENTIRE carburetor...or just get rid of it either

I'd go with a weber, etc replacement carb...

shoddy vacuum lines are a likely problem with your mileage.

*shrug* if you've got the time and patience why not replace the lines and reinstall and see how it runs?

I don't believe there is any adjustment regarding the electric choke assist. It is simply a heating element that heats the bimetallic spring inside to open the butterfly valve on top of the carb. You should be able to tell if it's working by feeling the black choke housing. It should be warm to the touch. There are adjustments regarding the choke pulloff but you need to get a good manual for those specifics. When you start the car cold the butterfly should open slightly if the pulloff is set right. Your carb should also have a sight glass on the side to show the level of fuel in the carb bowl. The level should fall in the middle of the sight glass. As mentioned earlier I would check all those vac lines for leaks and there are a ton of em.

Update: I replaced all the vacuum lines, and it was a HUUUGE improvement!!! Whenever the choke is set to the ''right'' position, the thing runs 100% perfectly. Now, i know for a fact that its the electric choke thats foolin around with my idle and cold-starting performance.....It doesnt need to be rebuilt or replaced like i thought before either....

How do i ''fix'' the electric choke?? Mine doesnt completely close correctly, and sometimes it doesnt open all the way either.....and what if its not working?

by the looks of things im having similar issues with my missus car,

the choke IS adjustable, simply loosen the three screws around the metal plate that holds the electric choke on and rotate it, clockwize if its too rich and anti-clockwize if it is too lean (i think, could be the other way around) this tightens and loosens the bi-metalic coil inside.

my misus car, drinks the juice, the choke doesnt work, hard to start on cold morning, the idel is playing up and is gutless as,

iv'e had the same modle car and it was a little rocket, with none of these problems

so far i've changed the coil, as it's resistance is out of spec and upped the timing, and today im planning on doing the sparkplugs, leads and rebuild the carby, i just need to figure out the modle of the carby so i can get the right rebuild kit, i realy dont want to replace ALL the vaccume hoses, but i might if you say it made a huge difference...

let you know how it goes..
