2011 Avalon Driver Seat Discomfort

I just bought a 2011 Avalon base trim in February and have noticed a problem with the driver's seat The main reason that I selected this car was that Consumer Reports rated the driver seat comfort as excellent. I have problems with my back, neck and shoulder and need a very comfortable seat. I now find that there is something like a horizontal piece of pipe that is hitting me in the very lower back and this aggravates my symptoms. The "pipe" feeling goes away some if you put in very high lumbar support, but that also causes problems. I am very disappointed and don't know what to do about this problem.

Yep - I know what you're talking about. Not only that issue but after about 50k miles I was so uncomfortable with the cooling fan pressing up into my butt-bone that I yanked the fan out.

Now I'm at 105k miles and the seat bottom presses against the underside of my thigh about midway between the knee and the butt-bone. It's to the point where I'm considering taking the car to an upholstry shop and asking them to replace or add foam under the leather. I'm really not that pleased with the comfort of the seats - regardless what Consumer Reports thinks.

Sorry for not providing you any solution...

It looks like I am going to have to get used to it or let my wife drive the Avalon. I could take the 2005 Odyssey EX-L which has very comfortable seats. Ain't that a kick in the a-- when a minivan has better seats than the Toyota flagship sedan that is touted for its comfort.

I have an '06 and I absolutely love the comfort of the seats. I am 6'2" 210 lbs. I honestly have not had a car this comfortable ever. Not even my Lexus GS was this comfortable. I must have the right build or I just got lucky with my seat.

I believe that yours is very comfortable. I had a 1996 Avalon XLS from new and kept it for nine years. The seats in it were absolutely comfortable, unfortunately this 2011 is not that way. I am 6'1" and 230 lbs.

Its a real shame that your 2011 is less comfortable than your '96. You could always do what Tom said and take it to an upholstery shop for added bolstering. Tom has pretty good advice from what I have seen on here.

I am sure your wife would love to take your new car for you. ;-)

The picture needs to be hosted somewhere online and then you post the URL of the pic into the thread using the 'Insert Image' button (square yellowish box) above the text field.

You also have the option of posting your pics at http://www.toyotanation.com/photos/showmembers.php and clicking on the 'My Photos' link and creating your own gallery.

I also just bought a 2011 Avalon and it only has 200 miles and I feel like I am sitting on a lead pipe, I am very upset. Anyone have any luck with the dealerships to have it fixed ?

What options do we have

Well here is another attempt to post a pic of the beautiful care that is causing a pain in my back.

No, I have not yet contacted my dealer about this. I intend to do so, but don't think they can do much about it on their own. This is a design problem that is the responsibility of Toyota USA. I believe that Toyota monitors this site. If everyone who has this problem would post their story here, Toyota would soon get the message and perhaps do something. After all, it is hard to push "Avalon Class" when the evidence is mounting that it is not very comfortable.

I am trying to reach out to people that have had issues with 2011 seats.

I just bought one , it has only 200 miles and already I am in pain. I feel as though I am sitting on a lead pipe. We bought the Avalon since it was suppose to be high end and comfortable and roomy. My husband is 6 ft 4 in tall and I commute a long way. I am very upset that this has occurred. I would trade it in for another car if I could find one that has the same size and other attributes.. I just want it fixed.

Can others please post that have same issue and maybe we can all complain to Toyota and register a case.
