acceleration problems

i drive a 1991 toyota v6 camry le and i can find out why it doesnt have any power (slow acceleration speeds) the RPMs go up to about 5k and still cant feel the acceleration in it. the only problem i could see was that the alt 80a fuse looks destroyed when someone tried replacing it, instead they left it in there and has yet to be replaced

Auto or manual? I've heard the LE only came with an auto, but I don't know if that's true or not.



How quickly does the engine get to 5k? Does engine speed increase quickly while the vehicle accelerates slowly, or does it take a long time to get engine speed up as well? How are your ignition components doing? If it's not firing on all cylinders, it can have a lot of acceleration issues.

If you're ignition timing is off the pull will be minimal when you get upwards of 3500 rpms. It'll actually feel like you have a transmission problem too because the car will want to shift faster. Make sure you short the connector before you set/check it.

yes, it is an automatic and the engine rpms go up pretty fast, but not sure about the ignition components.



and as far as i can tell, when my car shifts, it feels as if it will only shift if i let off the gas after the rpms get up there, and which connector would i need to check??

If engine speed climbs rapidly, sound like you could be losing the first gear band... Is acceleration poor in all gears?



Or perhaps a bad vacuum line. My Tracker wouldn't shift up until engine speed was high and I let off the gas- and then it would "slam" it into the next gear... However, the transmission it had before this was overfilled by the PO and it popped a seal. Stuff got where it shouldn't, it wore out the first gear band, and wouldn't accelerate worth beans. One day, the transmission just died. Still sitting in the garage.



Are you low on fluid? I don't know how the Camry trans works but that same Tracker one will not "grab" properly if it is low on fluid; in fact, it will let engine speed skyrocket but will not go into gear easily unless I coax it in, and then it will delay shifting and shift hard... Perhaps have the fluid level checked, or check it yourself if you're a car guy.
